Recently, my family was lying on the bed getting ready to pray before bedtime. My son, Duke, saw a plaque on my bedside table that says, “Attitude is everything.” Like any curious kid, he asked where it came from and what it meant.
That little sign reminds me of my parents every time I see it. Growing up, they taught me often about having the right attitude. Sometimes it felt like the lesson was “beat” into me, haha, but I am thankful for it now. They taught me that my attitude is my choice.
One thing my family often said was, “We do not have to. We get to.” That simple phrase changed the way I looked at life, but especially my Christian walk. Instead of seeing things as something forced on me, I could see them as opportunities and privileges. That change in thinking usually led to a better attitude and even better effort.
My parents did not just teach this with words. They showed it through Scripture and biblical principles.
Christ Modeled the Right Attitude
In Philippians 2:5–8, the Bible tells us to have the same mind as Christ. Jesus humbled Himself, became a servant, and obeyed the Father even to the point of death on the cross. Jesus showed perfect obedience, even when it was difficult. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed: “…not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:39) Sometimes we think having the right attitude means always feeling happy or excited. But many times, the right attitude means obeying God even when we do not feel like it.
The Right Attitude Comes from the Right Perspective
Our attitude is shaped by the way we see things. When we focus only on ourselves or our problems, it is easy to become negative. But when we focus on God and what He has done for us, our perspective changes.
The Bible gives us many reasons to trust and serve God:
When we remember these truths, we begin to see serving God as a privilege instead of a burden. We get to be part of His plan and bring Him glory.
The Right Attitude Brings Joy
No matter what we are doing, a bad attitude steals joy. Someone can have a great job, many blessings, or exciting opportunities and still be miserable because their attitude is wrong. Many times, people lose joy because they forget their “why.” They stop remembering God’s goodness and begin focusing only on problems. It is a privilege to serve God. He allows us to be part of His work even though we are imperfect. It is amazing to watch Him do things that only He can do.
People Are Watching Our Attitude
Others are always watching how Christians respond to life. Unsaved people especially want to know if our faith is real. Often, people pay more attention to our attitude than even our words. A joyful, humble, and obedient spirit can powerfully point others to Christ. Our attitude matters because it reflects what we truly believe about God. Even simple things are modeled by our attitude toward our kids and teenagers. I am trying to ask myself regularly how I am modeling to my kids things about my marriage, my personal relationship to Christ, my church attendance, my respect for authority, and so many more. It is not just enough to show action, but also the attitude with the action.
A right attitude is not based on our feelings or circumstances. It comes from trusting God, obeying Him, and remembering all He has done for us. Jesus showed us the perfect example of humility and obedience. When we see life from God’s perspective, we can have joy even during hard times. Our attitude matters because it affects our joy, our testimony, and the way others see Christ in us.
